Looking forward to our 2012 conference on water issues, Thursday April 26. Maybe the art department is psychic cuz we looked at some of that last year. Since then, not much change. We invite you to share these links:
More than 3000 homes on First Nations reserves across Canada lack running water. These residents haul their drinking water from a local tap and rely on outhouses or latrine buckets. Water shortages are common and sources are often contaminated, contributing to the spread of disease. The UN recognizes the right to clean drinking water but for many First Nations peoples this is not a reality. more
Schedule 2, a legal loophole, allows mining corporations to use Canadian lakes and rivers as dump sites for toxic waste. The Conservative government has disregarded human right for the sake of corporate profit. In early 2010 the provincial government approved a proposal to turn Teztan Bay into a dumping ground for a copper gold project called the prosperity project. The Tsilhqot’in people have lived in the area for centuries. They use the lake as a food source and for medicinal purposes it is sacred and has strong cultural significance for these indigenous people. The government has ignored requests from the Tsilhqot’in to save their land. Link to Peter Kent to close the loop hole
The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is being used to fund the privatization of water in Chile making it inaccessible for those who can’t afford it. Water is a basic human right. The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan owns 50.83 percent of the Chilean water utility. We urge everyone, especially teachers to sign here
